Code Update: NFPA Releases New Standards for 17, 17A, and 96

The National Fire Protection Association has provided important 2024 updates for extinguishing and suppression standards.

NFPA 17, Standard for Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems: Widely used to protect paint booth and vehicle systems.

The terms “Deficiency” and “Impairment” are now differentiated and examples of each are provided in Annex B.

NFPA 17A, Standard for Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems: Frequently paired with NFPA 96 for kitchen hood and kitchen exhaust systems.

The terms “Deficiency” and “Impairment” are now differentiated and examples of each are provided in Annex C.

NFPA 96, Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations: Also includes the act of removing grease, oil deposits, combustible creosote, and other residue.

Reports are now required for grease-buildup inspections on exhaust duct systems and must specify the location where cleaning is needed. Once cleaning is complete, a subsequent report must be submitted within two weeks of the original inspection. The combined requirements of these events highlight the seamless integration with the BuildingReports® solution, which has always allowed for detailed location data and follow-up reporting.
